2 Sides of CrossFit & Their Intersection
This morning I had an old CrossFit friend drop by Cróga because he was in the neighborhood. His name is Justin Moles and he’ll be competing this weekend for Team CrossFit Los Gatos at the NorCal Crossfit Games Regional.
We got to talking about where CrossFit was when we started doing it 5+ years ago, what it has become and the community as a whole. Naturally, we began discussing the “everyday member” vs. the “competitor” and how important it is for people to understand that there is a HUGE difference between the two in terms of volume and end goal, but that at the core each is identical and they are integral to each other.
CrossFit the FITNESS PROGRAM
The CrossFit that aims to deliver each of it’s practitioners “General Physical Preparedness” and make them “Ready for Anything” is where the majority of CrossFitters live, are comfortable, and will thrive.
This is the group that comes to the gym 3 to 5 days a week for 1 hour and looks to get stronger, lose weight, become more well rounded, meet new friends and/or have fun and they are successful at all of the above.
We are the ones that continue to bring in new faces that we think will add even more positive energy and good qualities to the community and we are the overwhelming majority involved in CrossFit.
CrossFit the SPORT
There is also The CrossFit Games aka The Sport of Fitness, which is the competition that we will be going to watch this weekend. This will consist of the top 48 fittest men, top 48 fittest women & top 30 fittest teams in Northern California all fighting for the top 3 spots in each group, which includes an invitation to The CrossFit Games Finals, which are in Carson, CA in late July.
The athletes will be pushed to their limit both mentally and physically by some of the most grueling and heavy workouts anyone could ever think up and they have all been training between 15 and 20 hours a week for this past year, if not longer, to just get this opportunity at Regionals.
This is a group of people that push their body to the limit day in and day out because they love CrossFit and competition. Many are ex-collegiate or professional athletes and have found a new sport that gives them a chance to continue to compete.
It is important to understand that this is less than 1% of all CrossFitters and although many cannot relate to their level of drive or competitive nature, they are an integral part of our community and to the consistent advancement of CrossFit as a fitness program because they are always pushing the limits and raising the bar.
CrossFit the COMMUNITY
The community is where CrossFit separates itself from all other fitness programs and this is where to two groups come together as one.
No matter how much weight is loaded on the barbell of each member of class, when the coach yells “3, 2, 1…Go!” the group instantly becomes one unit pushing each other toward the finish line.
We endure the same pain and suffering throughout the next 5-20 minutes and it is not uncommon to hear different members of class giving encouragement to each other when they can see a fellow CrossFitter looking at the bar and not wanting to pick it up off the ground.
And when it’s over, there are always high-fives all around.
These are the connections that we make that will continue to make us stronger and make this Fitness Program/Sport better on a daily basis.
