DWM – Moxie Madness Recap

Moxie Madness Recap 8/16 & 8/17

All in all this event went well for me physically. Our team didn’t do so well, 56th out of 75, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort.

Here are the events and some commentary including where I did well and any limiting factors.

1B: 4 Minutes for Male 2 and Female 2 to perform a Shoulder to Overhead 3 Rep Max

There was basically nowhere to warm up for this, which pissed me off because I had emailed the organizer ahead of time asking if I should bring equipment for our team and he told me there would be more than enough, and then when we showed up there were 2 racks, 6 barbells and maybe a couple hundred pounds of weight for 600 athletes. Because of this, when it came time to lift I hit a set of 3 push jerks at 225, then went to 255 and hit a triple split jerk, and then went to 275 and made 2, but ran out of time before I could hit the third rep. I would’ve made it, the first 2 were pretty easy. That’s good news because I’m pretty sure that would’ve been a 3RM S2OH PR.

1C: AMRAP in 10 MinutesMale 1 and Male 2 perform 35 Deadlifts, 275lb, Novice/Masters- 225lb
Female 1 and Female 2 perform 50 Box Jump Overs, 20”, Novice/Masters- 20”
Switch
Female 1 and Female 2 perform 35 Deadlifts, 185lb, Novice/Masters- 155lb
Male 1 and Male 2 perform 50 Box Jump Overs, 24” Novice/Masters- 24”
Switch

There was no limiting factor here. Me and Anthony crushed the deadlifts and box jump overs. We did the DLs in sets of 5 easily and on the last round with time running out he hit 20 unbroken and then I hit 15 unbroken pretty easily to complete the round before time ran out. I liked the way I was able to move 275 fairly easily, very encouraging for DL events and the open next year.

Event 2:
For Time:
Team ladder to 10 reps, then switch exercises and repeat ladder to 10 reps.
Male 1- 1 KB Swing, 24kg Novice/Masters- 16kg
Male 2- 1 Sandbag Thruster, 65lb
Female 1- 1 KB Swing, 16kg Novice/Masters- 12kg
Female 2- 1 Sandbag Thruster, 45lb
Advance Forward
Male 1- 2 KB Swings, 24kg Novice/Masters- 16kg
Male 2- 2 Sandbag Thrusters, 65lb
Female 1- 2 KB Swings, 16kg Novice/Masters- 12kg
Female 2- 2 Sandbag Thrusters, 45lb
Advance Forward
3-3-3-3
Advance Forward
4-4-4-4
And so on until 10-10-10-10
Once station 10 is complete, switch exercises and repeat the ladder from 1-1-1-1 to
10-10-10-10 again.

I never really struggled here, but my forearms were pretty smoked from holding the kettlebell all the way down the field. I think my grip strength and endurance still needs some work. The thrusters on the way back weren’t too bad, just awkward with the sandbag.

Workout #3
For Time: (10 Minute Time Cap)
400 yard Relay Swim

We all swam 50m at a time. I went first and I ended up swimming one of our girls second 50, so I swam 150 total. Nothing too bad here, but it did make me realize I should probably be swimming more often because I never struggled, but I wasn’t exactly fast on the third one. I was definitely out of breath after each 50m too, so if I had to do Bar MUs like in the games I would’ve been crushed after a round or 2, let alone 10.

4B: 4 Minutes for Male 2 and Female 2 to perform a Bench Press 3 Rep Max.

I bench pressed 245 for 3 reps, which I thought was pretty damn good. Once again there was nowhere to warm this up, but I haven’t really benched much in the last 6 years so I was happy.

4C: For Time: (16 minute cap)
200 Wall Balls, 20/14lb to a 10’ target, Novice/Masters- 14/12lb to a 10’ target
150 Power Snatches, 95/65lb, Novice/Masters- 75/55lb
100 Toes to Bar

Me and Anthony did 30 WBs each for 2 rounds, while the girls did 15s and then Anthony did the last 20 reps. Then we did sets of 10s for the guys on the snatches and sets of 5 for the girls. Then we just did max reps T2B and worked in order until we finished them.

I cruised on the WBs, felt pretty good and went extremely fast on the snatches and then I did well, but could’ve used a little better grip on the T2B. However, we were doing max sets, so I was doing 10+ each time I got on the bar, the only reason I really ever came down though was because I couldn’t hold on any longer.

Workout 5:

Alternating pairs ladder:
Female 1- 1 KB Snatch, 16kg, Novice/Masters- 12kg
Male 1- 1 Burpee over planking Male 2
Female 2- 2 KB Snatches, 16kg, Novice/Masters- 12kg
Male 2- 2 Burpees over planking Male 1
Female 1- 3 KB Snatches, 16kg, Novice/Masters- 12kg
Male 1- 3 Burpees over planking Male 2
Female 2- 4 KB Snatches, 16kg, Novice/Masters- 12kg
Male 2- 4 Burpees over planking Male 1
And so on until “time” is called.
(2 Minute Rest)
Part 2: AMRAP in 8 Minutes
Alternating pairs ladder:
Male 1- 1 KB Snatch, 24kg, Novice/Masters- 16kg
Female 1- 1 Burpee over planking Male 2
Male 2- 2 KB Snatches, 24kg, Novice/Masters- 16kg
Female 2- 2 Burpees over planking Male 1
Male 1- 3 KB Snatches, 24kg, Novice/Masters- 16kg
Female 1- 3 Burpees over planking Male 2
Male 2- 4 KB Snatches, 24kg, Novice/Masters- 16kg
Female 2- 4 Burpees over planking Male 1
And so on until “time” is called.

This one absolutely sucked, but I pushed through. Nothing really major to report, I did all my burpees fast and I did all my KB snatches unbroken.

Workout #6A, 6B, & 6C
AMRAP in 20 Minutes
300 yard Sandbag Shuttle, 65/45lb
Max Calories on the Rower
Max Calories on the Assault AirBike
Rest

This one went pretty good. Everything here sucked except the rest, but the sandbag run was definitely the hardest on the lungs. I was pretty surprised how difficult it was to breathe with that sandbag. I felt pretty good on the rower and the airbike though and I was definitely doing a lot of work each time I got on both.

Final thoughts on the weekend:

I wish our team had done better, but we had fun and myself and my teammates all gave it everything we had, so I guess it’s just a reflection of where we are at this point in time as a team.

I felt good all weekend, I did more than my fair share and was never crushed to the point where I couldn’t do more, and I recovered well between days and after the second day. All of these things are good signs that I’m still headed in the right direction and I’m getting better and better.

My strength numbers were good and I am encouraged by that.

This was my first team event and I had a lot of fun, but I think individual is more my style. I will probably do 1 of these a year just for fun, but I really like pushing myself to the limit and not having rests in workouts so I can really know I’m giving it everything I’ve got, rather than just going hard and then hanging out and then going hard again.
