It was only a few months ago that Erica aka “Yoshi” walked in the door and wanted to join Cróga. She had just moved to the area, but had been a CrossFitter in Maryland before relocating to California, so she knew the ropes. It became evident very quickly that she was going to fit right in with our members with her positive attitude, dedication to getting better, and love of dogs.

I had a feeling that we were going to be a great fit for Erica when she told me she PR’d her shoulder press on her first day at Cróga and as days and weeks went by I just kept watching her make steady progress and master new skills. Congratulations on being our Member of the Month, Yoshi! Your fun approach to life is fun to have around the gym and you dedication to constantly improving is inspiring to our other members and coaches. Keep it up!

Here is a Q&A with Erica about her experiences here at Cróga:

(Coach Dave): When did you join Cróga?

(Erica): I joined Cróga officially earlier this year on April 21st. ::big smiley face:: And from day one, everyone at Cróga has been super supportive and welcoming.

(D): What were you doing before for fitness?

(E): I joined CF Tough Temple in Maryland in March 2015 and continued with CrossFit Reborn until December 2015 when we decided to move back to California. I was doing a lot of running before I joined Cróga.

(D): What was your first workout? First reaction to your first workout?

(E): I did a 6 class Foundations session so it probably wasn’t as bad as most other first timers, so our first workout was an AMRAP of hand release push ups and ab-mat situps. Our final WOD class to close out Foundations was Fran and that was a doozy!! It took me forever and those pull-ups just killed me! They still do now, but THEN and with a black band! Hah!

(D): What improvements have you seen in the way you feel, look and perform?

(E): I’ve definitely seen improvement in ALL aspects! Since joining Cróga, I’ve already PR’d several different movements including the handstand!! Before coming to Cróga, there was no such thing as a handstand for me other than a wall walk. NOW I can kick up to handstand and hold it comfortably for 30+ seconds! I feel stronger after EVERY single workout I finish at Cróga! ::Deadpool voice:: MAXIMUM EFFORT!

(D): What’s your favorite WOD?

(E): 2000M Row and The Ghost – I’ve only done them once, but they were some very memorable WODs for me.

(D): What’s your least favorite WOD?

(E): I’d have to say any WOD that I am not able to Rx, which is obviously quite a few for me and I know that it’s not always possible to Rx every single workout, but I can work toward it. I am also not fond of wall balls, so when I see a WOD with WBs then I know I’m in for a really tough workout.

(D): What do you love about CrossFit?

(E): It can really push you beyond what you think you’re capable of. Every workout is tough and it doesn’t get any easier because there’s always room for improvement. It’s constantly challenging you mentally and physically. The community of CF is pretty frickin awesome, too. There is so much energy and passion!

(D): What’s been your favorite culinary discovery since joining Cróga?

(E): Unfortunately, I haven’t been focusing on my diet since joining Cróga, so I can’t exactly answer that. However, I have been staring down Power Supply for awhile as the previous 2 boxes I was at also had it and it’s awesome that Cróga is doing it now. Soooo I may give in and try it out soon.

(D): What’s your biggest fitness goal for the rest of 2016?

(E): I’m confident I’ll be able to start crushin’ some kipping handstand push-ups in the near future now that I’ve got the handstand down. I’d like to get my first kipping pull up without a band by the end of the year. I’m also about to start training for my fourth marathon which is the CIM coming up in December.

(D): What words of advice do you have for new members or people considering joining Cróga?

(E): Don’t stop. The first workout is going to be a beeotch! But so is the next one, and the next one, and the next one. You’ll want to quit halfway through sometimes, but you gotta remember why you’re here. Cróga has a mission and it’s YOU. They are committed to help you achieve your goals because you’ve already made a commitment walking through their door. I’ve been here 4 months and have already seen a major difference in how I feel and how I perform all the while making some of my own ESPN highlights! Da da da, da da da! Just remember that saying: “Wow, I really regret that workout.” – No one ever.

(D): Anything to add that we didn’t touch on yet?

(E): I just really want to thank Dave and the coaches and staff of Cróga for being so awesome at what you do! And all of the Cróga Athletes – thank you for being so welcoming from day one and for always cheering each other on in either pushing through a workout or reaching a PR! I’m so grateful to be a part of the Cróga CF community!
