At the beginning of this year, one of our devout 6 AMers, Jen, ran the Disney Tinker Bell 1/2 Marathon. The race is 13.1 miles that starts and finishes inside Disneyland. Jen signed up for the race in July of 2013 thinking that she would use it as motivation to get committed to training and getting in better shape.
A few months after signing up for the race, Jen decided that she was going to give CrossFit a try as her training method for the race and luckily, we were right around the corner from her house. She showed up with her friend Melissa and from that first class in September, Jen and Melissa have come to class 3-5 days a week, religiously.
In an admitted mistake, the furthest distance that Jen ran before the 1/2 marathon was 5 miles, but when she returned she said “I felt really good throughout the 13.1 miles and the pace I had for mile 1 was the same as the pace of my last mile. I felt really strong throughout and believe that not only was I truly physically stronger than I realized, but also mentally.”
This was Jen’s 5th 1/2 marathon, so this wasn’t a new task, but she said she was surprised that training only with CrossFit not only prepared her for the race, but allowed her to feel strong the remainder of the day at the park with her family.
Jen grew up playing many different sports and has done a lot of different things for exercise in her adult life, but as she says “this is the first time in my life that I can say I know what it feels like to feel strong. It’s pretty cool.”
Congratulations on a job well done, Jen! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you with the hard work and dedication that you show.
