David D. Is Our January Member Of The Month

It’s been a slow, steady and successful journey so far for David and with the determination he displays on a regular basis there is no end in sight. When David started at Cróga he was a little overweight and deconditioned, but we could tell that he was coordinated, agile and athletic.

It wasn’t long after he joined that I could see the spark in his eye. He was doing well and losing some weight, but he was also getting much stronger quickly and was absolutely dead set on doing 1 thing, a pull-up.

He would be at almost every workout that involved pull-ups and I would often see him working on his kip after class. After a few months of getting stronger in the back and shoulder and really developing the technique, David did his first unassisted pull-up, and that’s where the landslide of accomplishments all began. He started to break off sets of 3, then 5, then 7 pull-ups at a time, he started deadlifting 300+ lbs, he was moving toward cleaning 200+ lbs and he was nearly unstoppable as he continued to build his confidence, clean up his technique and lose more weight.

The last step for David was cleaning up his diet and during the month of January, he participated in our Whole30. This clean eating philosophy has been the last piece to the puzzle that David needed to take him to the next level. To date he’s lost over 40 lbs and he told me that he hasn’t seen the number on the scale he’s at now since he was about 21 years-old.

Congratulations on a successful journey so far, David. Keep up the good work, we’re all proud of you!

Here is a little Q&A with David about his experiences and successes here at Cróga CrossFit:

Coach Dave (C): When did you join Cróga?

David D. (D): I joined in September of 2013.

(C): What were you doing before for fitness?

(D): Working on my forearm drinking a lot of Coronas.

(C): What improvements have you seen in the way you look, feel and perform?

(D): I have notice the biggest change in my life with my family life, I find myself having more energy for my 3 boys and more patience. I have also lost over 40lbs, this is the most exciting part of CrossFit, seeing your body changing and having to purchase new clothing. You know when your body has changed when your wife tells you she did not know that I was hiding muscles under that XL body of mine. The other improvement is in my athletic performance, I love to play basketball and I find myself being able to get up and down the court with out the oxygen tank next to me.

(C): What’s your favorite WOD?

(D): Any WOD that has an AMRAP, I love to work hard and as fast as possible, and anything with your own body weight, since I have a lot of that it makes it pretty interesting.

(C): What’s your least favorite WOD?

(D): Not a fan of DEAD Lifts, but I understand that we need to do them for well roundness.

(C): What do you love about CrossFit?

(D): I love the fact that it is structured, you know what you are going to do before you get there, it’s an hour, you’re in you’re out. Plus the coaches and the members really make it feel like a community. Everyone is there to help each other and motivate each other.

(C): What’s been your favorite culinary discovery since joining Cróga?

(D): I would have to say the slow cooker CARNITAS/ Pork these are better than anything at any Taquieria or any Mexican restaurant, I can eat these for days, need to figure out how to make the Tortillas be apart of the Paleo diet.

(C): What’s your biggest fitness goal for 2015?

(D): I would love to get down to about 205-200lbs , when I started I was 255lbs and I am currently about 215. I would also love to get the double unders without the single in between each double under, we are close…

(C): What words of advice do you have for new members or people considering joining Cróga CrossFit?

(D): Throw everything good or bad out that you have hear about CrossFit and just try it, make your own decision, this is not only a workout it’s a community, it’s also a great way to get in shape and build muscle. You wont regret it.

(C): Anything to add that we didn’t touch on yet?

(D): I just want to thank all of you for the great environment and the great classes that you have. I don’t think I could have lost the weight that I did with the support of all the coaches and members. I think that it should also be noted that no matter what my physical condition is, from being injured to just being out of shape the coaches always made sure to adjust the work out. I really appreciated this and always knew that no matter my condition the coaches were there to help. Great Job all!
