With The 2014 CrossFit Games Open right around the corner, I have been getting a lot of questions/concerns about how it’s all going to work. Because of this, I thought I’d put together another short blog post for you all with as many answers as I can give you ahead of the first workout announcement on Thursday at 5 pm.
What are the workouts?
We do not have these answers yet. In true CrossFit fashion, the workouts will remain a mystery until 5 pm on Thursday night for the next 5 weeks. You will be able to see this live announcement on The CrossFit Games Website and we will also post it in our Facebook Member Group.
Will I be able to scale the workouts?
This is a huge detractor from signing up for The Open for many of you, but fortunately, I just found out that this year, there will be a check box where you enter your score that will say “I scaled this workout”. We would like as many of you as possible to complete the workouts as prescribed (RX’d), even if that means your score will be lower, but if the movement standards and weight require will not allow you to complete the reps properly, we would still like you to participate.
When on Friday between 5:30 and 7:30 will my workout be?
We will not be able to give you this answer until we know what the workout each week is. This is because we cannot write the heat times until we know the length of the workout. On Thursday night after we know the length of time and equipment required for the WOD, I will create a google doc with heat times where you can sign up to compete and/or judge.
We would like as many of you as possible to arrive at 5:30 and stay as long as you can to be a part of this community event and to cheer on your fellow athletes. However, if work or other commitments require you to come & go quickly, please make sure to arrive AT LEAST 15 minutes before your heat time so you can properly warm up and make sure you understand the movement standards.
How many workouts do I have to do?
A lot of you are worried about signing up for the open because you’ll be out of town one of the weeks or you might have something come up on one of the next 5 Fridays. By signing up you have committed to doing the first workout aka 14.1 (14 for 2014 & 1 for workout 1). There are 5 total workouts, but you only need to complete the first one to be a registered part of this team. For a lot of you, this could be your biggest event all year. Even if you scale the first workout, it will be a great opportunity to really push yourself to your limit and see how much progress you’ve made since you started. Maybe you’ll enjoy it so much you’ll be back for the other 4 weeks to participate, or at least cheer everyone else on.
Below is a timeline of how The Open will work:
- Thursday 5:00pm – Workout Release
- Thursday 10:00pm – Heat times Google Doc Released
- Friday 1:00pm – Coach Dave will blog about workout strategy
- Friday 5:30pm – Friday Night Lights starts – competitors are expected to arrive at the top of the hour (AT THE LATEST) for warm up and their heat
- Monday 5:00pm – Scores due (you must submit your own score each week, Coach Dave will then validate it online)
Besides that, I’m not sure there’s anything I haven’t answered in this post or my last one “The 2014 CrossFit Games Open”.
