Jill P. Is Our October Member Of The Month
Jill has a great story and as a coach she intrigues me. She’s a stay at home mom and a self proclaimed “nerd”, which aren’t the two most common categories of people that belong to our gym. However, this isn’t because either of these groups can’t be successful at CrossFit, it’s because these groups of people just don’t tend to seek out CrossFit as their selected form of fitness.
Jill on the other hand did her research on-line and we are very glad that she found us and took the leap to try CrossFit at Cróga. She has been a wonderful addition to our community with her positive attitude, friendliness, interest in the process and progression of learning new skills and willingness to try anything, (we got her upside down yesterday for her first handstand and a bunch of handstand push-ups!)
We are very excited to reward all Jill’s hard work with our Member of the Month award and it was very obvious she was the right choice once one coach made the suggested and every other coach wrote back in 30 minutes with YES, she’s the right choice! We’re excited to see where this next year takes you and your fitness, Jill. Congratulations!
Here is a little Q&A with Jill about her experiences at Cróga CrossFit:
(Coach Dave): When did you join Cróga?
(Jill): May of 2015. CrossFit had been something I wanted to try for a while, but I was a little intimidated by the intensity of it. I researched local boxes online and Cróga totally stood out to me, so I dipped my toe in and signed up for the intro class. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with it and dive all in.
(D): What were you doing before for fitness?
(J): I was a gym rat and boot camper in my younger days, but I had been pretty inactive and out of shape for the last several years. Earlier this year I started walking/hiking a ton and doing body weight routines in my house. I really wanted to step it up, but didn’t want to go back to a regular gym again.
(D): What improvements have you seen in the way you look, feel and perform?
(J): Even in six short months, I feel like CrossFit has had a huge impact on my life. I’ve reaped some excellent physical improvements in strength, endurance, body composition, and general energy level. However, I’ve also really appreciated some of the more unseen benefits: mental toughness, confidence, and the capacity to do everyday things more efficiently.
(D): What’s your favorite WOD?
(J): I love lifting WOD’s, especially when they have dead lifts or shoulder-to-overheads in them. I also like tabatas for some reason.
(D): What’s your least favorite WOD?
(J): It pains me to see anything with a lot of double unders, toes-to-bars, and until recently HSPU’s. These are all skills I need to work on though, so I’ve been forcing myself to go on those days.
(D): What do you love about CrossFit?
(J): CrossFit meets you where you’re at (couch potato to elite athlete) and keeps pushing you to be better and stronger. If you go and put in the work, you will improve. I also love the fact that I never regret going; it’s never a waste of time! Whether I get to go push myself by lifting heavy weights or challenge myself to work on skills I’m weaker at, I’m usually super excited to go to class. But even if I’m tired, stressed, or in a bad mood beforehand, I go because I know I’ll always feel better after.
(D): What’s been your favorite culinary discovery since joining Cróga?
(J): I’ve chatted with Dave several times about Nom-Nom Paleo and he always heavily endorsed the Cracklin’ Chicken. I’ve made it a couple times now and it does not disappoint! I’m also looking forward to making the Chinese 5-Spice Ribs he raves about.
(D): What’s your biggest fitness goal for the rest 2015?
(J): I want to be able to do a strict pull-up. All the ring rows eventually have to add up to something!
(D): What words of advice do you have for new members or people considering joining Cróga CrossFit?
(J): Even if you’re intimidated, give it a shot! Believe enough in yourself to know you can accomplish seemingly impossible workouts and trust the coaches to get you through it safely.
(D): Hand Stand Push Ups or Box Jumps?
(J): Box Jumps at the moment, but I may change my answer if I get more comfortable with HSPU!
(D): Anything to add that we didn’t touch on yet?
(J): The coaches are all dedicated, knowledgeable, supportive, and fun! I feel lucky to get to ask you all questions and get such detailed help. Your passion for fitness and the members is obvious. The members are awesome, encouraging, and helpful. I totally enjoy getting to chat with you fine people during the warm-up, then getting our butts kicked together during the WOD, and finally fist bumping for a job well done. Everyone tries their best, which always inspires me to do the same. I look forward to working out and getting to know more of you in the coming months.
