Joel S. Is The July Member Of The Month

Joel is one of those guys that moves so well and is so efficient and knowledgeable that he can sometimes slide under the radar in class despite his outgoing personality. He regularly impresses me with how well he moves and how mobile he is, and I will gladly admit I’m envious of him and hope I can be just like him when I grow up, haha.

On top of his athletic prowess, Joel is extremely smart and witty and brings some fun and edge to our early morning classes. All our coaches love it when he walks in the door and with him being one of the top-5 in class attendances each month, it makes me wonder what took us so long to make him our Member of the Month.

He’s to getting stronger, more mobile and fitter with age, Joel! You’re an inspiration to more of us than you know. Keep it up and we’ll keep cheering you on.

Here is a Q&A with Joel about his experiences here at Cróga:unnamed

(Coach Dave): When did you join Cróga?

(Joel): A year ago, July 2015

(D): What were you doing before for fitness?

(J): For about a year and a half prior, I belonged to another CrossFit gym that closed. Also, since I’m a real estate agent, on the weekends I practice running across busy intersections with 25 pound open house signs in each arm (it’s the Realtor version of the Farmer carry).

(D): What improvements have you seen in the way you look, feel and perform?

(J): I feel like I’m continually progressing for example, in July, I think I had about eight personal records which was a high number for me. I feel more rested and relaxed and I am able to sleep better and concentrate better in my work.

(D): What is your favorite WOD?

(J): What’s a WOD? Just kidding… My favorite ‘Workout of the Day’ is the one that I’ve just completed. They are all challenging and invigorating.

(D): What do you love about CrossFit?

(J): I love the challenge, the combination of strength and endurance and the variety. It seems like no workout is repeated for several weeks if not months.

(D): What was your first impression of Cróga CrossFit?

(J): Honestly, I almost didn’t even consider Cróga because I thought the space was too small. The CrossFit gym I was coming from was about 10 times the size with a quarter of the members. Other members of my former gym had joined Cróga and liked it so, I thought I’d give it a shot. Sometimes it’s a little cozy, but you and the coaches creatively work things out so that I always feel challenged by the WOD.

(D):What do you like about Cróga CrossFit in particular?

(J): The coaches, you Dave, PJ, Diana, Jason, Marcus, are the coaches that I’ve been exposed to and are all top-notch . The instruction is excellent and I get a lot of good feedback from them to improve my performance. I love the Cróga community, Dave you’ve attracted a great group of ‘like-minded’ members that are very supportive about everybody doing the best that they can in their particular workouts.

(D): What days and times do you come to Cróga?

(J): 6 AM Monday through Friday and 8 AM on Saturday. I’m a morning person, I like to make a habit of a regular schedule and I feel like it’s a great way to start my day.

(D): What’s your favorite post workout routine?

(J): Using the foam roller in front of the big fan. I’m always recruiting members for the ‘Fan Club’.

(D): What’s your biggest fitness goal for the rest of 2016?

(J): To continue to progress and improve in terms of both strength and endurance setting new PR’s on a regular basis. I’d say the most important goal for me for the balance of the year would be to lose 20 pounds.

(D): What words of advice do you have for new members or people considering joining Cróga?

(J): There’s room for everyone no matter what your current fitness level is. I’d say stick with it give yourself a minimum goal of say six months to see how you feel after that period of time. Also focus on your personal improvement and not others in the group. Also, make a commitment to come as frequently as you can.

(D): If you were describe how you perform in the WOD for any particular day as a movie character, what character are you and what movie are you in?

(J): Rocky Balboa in the original movie “Rocky”… yo Adrian!

(D): If you were to reincarnate, what animal would you come back as, and why?

(J): I’d come back as Murph ‘The Wonder Dog’ because he teaches me to show up every day, relax and not take myself too seriously.

(D): Anything you would like to add?
